ABOUT

Carollee Norris is a Math Education Consultant who regularly presents seminars at regional and international math conferences. She also frequently presents professional development workshops and demonstration lessons for teachers and educators at schools, school districts and educational organizations. Her dynamic workshops are lively and interactive, leaving participants wanting more.

Anyone who has spent any amount of time with Carollee knows she is passionate about mathematics and mathematics education, and her passion is contagious.  To quote her: “I believe deeply that students need to encounter mathematics in a way that allows them to make sense of it, to understand concepts, to manipulate numbers freely. I want students (and teachers) to love mathematics as much as I do, and that happens when they really get to get “messy’ with the math.”

Carollee spent ten years as a classroom teacher before becoming the Numeracy Support Teacher for School District #60 (Peace River North), in Fort St. John, British Columbia, Canada. For ten years, she worked four days a week as the Numeracy Support Teacher for her district and had the unique opportunity to concurrently teach math to seven different classes of children ranging from grades 2-5 one day a week at Charlie Lake Elementary School.  In teaching those classes on a regular basis she was able to continually hone her skills as she applied the very methods she coached teachers to use.

Carollee served as an executive member of the British Columbia Association of Mathematics Teachers (BCAMT) for many years and she also taught the Designs for Learning Elementary Mathematics many times as a Sessional Instructor for Simon Fraser University (SFU) before retiring.  She is dedicated to creating productive learning communities in schools and classrooms and approaches curriculum design using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to meet the needs of all students, including gifted students and those with special needs.

Highly regarded among her peers, Carollee has been selected for multiple BC Ministry of Education mathematics curriculum development teams. She has worked as a Faculty Associate with Simon Fraser University for the AHCOTE (Alaska Highway Consortium On Teacher Education) Program, and she has published several articles on mathematics education which have been published in Vector Magazine and online.

With a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Northern British Columbia, thirteen years as an intermediate public school teacher, and 10 years coaching and supporting teachers in School District #60, Carollee’s experience is comprehensive and well rounded.

When Carollee is not infecting people with her highly contagious love for math, she can be found stamping cards, playing with her grandkids, or traveling.  She is working on her first book, not yet titled.
